Mental health in simplest words means emotional and behavioral security. The behavioral patterns thought processes, and feelings are mainly described when we talk about an individual’s mental health. Mental health is also described as the absence of any mental illness or disorders, the ability of the mind to work in an emotionally and behaviorally balanced way is a sign of maintained mental health. Itis a very sensitive issue which needs to discussed every now and then on a daily basis for awareness purpose in a very morally correct way.

Generally, people do a lot of physical activities like exercise, home workouts, swimming, games and sports, yoga to keep a check on their physical health but they forget about their mental health which is equally important. Just like the above-mentioned activities for maintaining the body, we need to do activities that can maintain mental health too but before knowing those activities we need to know the importance of keeping mental health safe and sound.

 

Effects of lockdown and pandemic situation on mental health:-

 

The preventive measures from Coronavirus-like self-isolation, reduced or almost no access to family and friends, zero social gatherings, no fun activities are taking a heavy toll on the mental health of people from every stratum and every age group, people stuck with toxic partners, narcissistic parents, and siblings are suffering tremendously and having a 24-hour contact without any personal space is getting heinous for people so it is very important for everyone to be kind, compassionate and loving towards each other also we have to be a good listener to those around us because one can only share well if they have a great listener around them.

Risk factors:-

 

A history of mental Illness from a parent or sibling increases the risk of having a mental health disorder at a higher level, the risk is particularly strong when a blood relative has and anxiety disorder or depression.

Formation of a positive or negative mental health starts from early age i.e. childhood and its experiences. A loving and supportive family and a happy home contribute largely to a positive outlook at life, while experiences like bullying at school, narcissistic parents, toxic and competitive friends, persistent beating during childhood, loss of a parent or a loved one can lead to a severe level of trauma that can leave an indelible effect on an individual’s mental health.

The conditions and environment that affects the mental well being of children apply equally to adolescents, during this life stage for escapism individual tend to fall into the pit of alcohol and drug abuse which further worsens the condition of mind.

Other risk factors include stressful life situations, poor work-life balance, death of a loved one, heartbreak, and major financial problems.

 

Common disorders:-

 

The most common disorders that come under mental health disorders are anxiety disorders i.e. panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, and depression but if a person has a history of trauma and negative life situations disorders like schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and personality disorders are also seen.

 

Early signs:-

 

Most common signs are:-

  • Feeling sad or depressed for a long duration of time.
  • Trouble sleeping.
  • Sudden dramatic changes in mood.
  • Social withdrawal.
  • Underestimation about oneself.
  • Losing interest and hobbies.
  • Lack of concentration.

 

Treatment:-

 

Like any other illness mental illness can be treated and people recover well from the illness and even completely. Just like first aid for physical health, there are remedies for mental health too.

  • The first and foremost thing is talking and sharing with a friend or loved one whom you can trust.
  • Practicing meditation and yoga on an everyday basis especially during the lockdown.
  • Social media and digital detox for some hours.
  • Proper healthy nutrition helps a lot when it comes to mental well-being.
  • Reading good books
  • Watching motivational movies.
  • Indulging in a group activity that interests you.

 

But if the duration of sadness and depression is extremely long and completely unreasonable then it is suggested to seek professional help. The first step in obtaining treatment is getting diagnosed on the basis of a particular pattern of symptoms. It mainly involves medications, psychological therapy, and community support programs and in countries like India, it is still considered to be shameful to seek medical help awareness should be made to not treat like it Taboo.

Everyday we see social media flooding with posts about speaking up about mental health issues but we only encourage the talking side of it, but never the listening side. As much as we promote to talk about the demons inside our head people without anxiety and depression should also be encouraged to be a good listener, because in the hour of emotional need, no one is really expecting to listen to replies like , “it’s just a phase”, “ it’s all in your head”, “keep yourself busy”, “follow your passion” and many more to go because like physical illness mental illness too needs a fix, we don’t recommend a cancer patient to just not think about it to get better we recommend them to take medication and chemotherapy.
